VENETIAN MIRROR is a large scale interactive installation blending contemporary digital technology with traditional Venetian glass. When the visitor walks up to the installation, their image doesn’t immediately appear in the mirror. Only if they keep very still, will the reflection slowly appear, like a photograph being developed. This installation invites the audience to reflect on the mystery of time itself and on the sense of oneself and one’s body.

Venetian Mirror is by Andy Cameron and Sam Baron with Oriol Ferrer Mesia and Goncalo Campos.

Venetian Mirror is showcased at the “Decode” show in the V&A Museum, London.

In Get In the Action, a video coach leads visitors through three sports activities. Visitors see themselves in silhouette on the screen, and their actions create magical body recordings of the unique trails their bodies make while exercising. The exhibit mimics the way sports scientists analyze athletes movements and, at the same time provides a sense of magic, creation, fascination and engagement with our bodies own potential as a creative force. I was responsible for the programming of the installation. We used 3 infrared cameras.

Scalare is a Twitter client built as minimal and unintrusive as possible. It shows your friend’s tweets as Growl notifications.

Scalare is built with simplicity in mind. It is meant for the casual twitter user that doesn’t want to be distracted too much. I chose a windowless UI because that’s how I think Twitter should work; minimal messages you read and keep going. Feel like sending a tweet? Just press the easy key-combo, type what’s in your mind, and you are back to work.

Camera based installation for Snibbe Interactive, currently installed at the Nemo Science Museum in Amsterdam.

Looking for Life is an immersive interactive experience exploring the origins of life created by Snibbe Interactive. People are struck by virtual lightning bolts that gradually form cell walls around their bodies. When people touch, proto-cells emerge from their bodies and float upwards. High up on the screen, quotes about the origins of life from Darwin and other great thinkers float in, and, twisting into a helix, enter the cell in an explosion that enlivens the cell. This experience lets people contemplate the mysteries, questions and debates surrounding the origins of life.

The experience can be found at the NEMO Science Centre in Amsterdam accompanying an exhibit on the Yuri Miller experiment, and is excellent for other science museums with exhibits on the origins of life, cell biology, religion and science. And for biotech companies.

Small Arcade game for the iPhone that uses the orientation sensor.

Tunnel is a small game designed for the iPhone. It is my tribute to Tunnel, an arcade game that one can play on an hp48 calculator. The user flies a spaceship through a narrow curvy corridor by tilting the iphone.

The intention was to make a game as simple and direct as possible, and keeping it very low profile to save device battery. The game offers a world-wide high score table to encourage players to beat their own scores.

Find it in the Apple Store.

See the game’s webpage here.

Visuals for Richie Hawtin & Co. together with Ali Demirel, at Sonar 2008.

I had a chance to do visuals for Minus; Richie Hawtin and Co. Sonar invited them again during its 2008 edition.

Thanks to Ali Demirel, who controls all the visuals for the whole set, I was given a chance to experience the joy of controlling live visuals for an enormous crowd (around 6 thousand people) dancing during 5 hours to minimal techno.

See full flickr set here.

We used my software several times during the set to make adaptive abstract visuals. Several parameters were controlled through a Midi keyboard to make the graphics seen on the several huge LED screens match the sound.

I contributed with two different ideas. One, called “Muralla”, where a bunch of particles can be controlled to either “do their thing” or follow any motion pattern you can think of. See it in action here. The other one consists of bugs crawling around the screen, see it here.

Later on “Muralla” was used as opening for the whole tour. See a little clip of “Muralla” in action I found on youtube.

“I Ragazzi della Prateria” were on charge of the visuals for the Jovanotti Safari Tour, and they asked me if I could develop a piece of soft for a part of it.

The guys record live footage of the musicians on stage with a videocamera, and they pass the live signal through my software to overlay the “masks” that are the main image of the tour.

Intractive floor installation for Snibbe Interactive, currently installed at CalAcademy of Sciences, in San Francisco.

This is a project I developed during my period at Snibbe Interactive. I was responsible of the programming, following my personal interpretation on Katherine Trimble’s design and concept. See the product page here.

The project offers a view of the madagascar rainforest, allowing museum visitors to step in and interact with it. It is a floor projection controlled by an infrared camera. Plants, leaves, ants and bugs react to visitors. Visitors can can interact with bug bait, and encouraged to place it in one of the bug traps. When left alone, bugs will crawl for bait, and get trapped. When this happens, the visitors are rewarded on a second screen with scientific information about the captured bug.

Bug Rug is currently installed in the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
